Kayak 001 - Great Auk - Stripping the Deck

The strongback stand was modified with cradles (photo left) to hold the kayak in the upright position. |

The Sheer Strips (photos left column) (Dec 5, 2012)
The deck sheer strips are "cooked" poplar. Somehow they cook the poplar and it turns dark brown throughout.
They were milled to about 3/8" wide in the hope that the thinner strips would more easily accommodate the twisting and bending required of the deck. They start out pretty flat (horizontal) at the bow and stern but go vertical amidships.
In the photo you can see the screws required to hold them im place. Staples wouldn't cut it.
Accent Strips
The accent strips are narrow strips of "cooked" (dark) and regular (light) poplar. They were stapled to the forms to hold them in place.
